Important Dates in Georgia History
 

2,000 BC - Pottery is first made in North America near Augusta

1540 - Hernando DeSoto explores Georgia

1562 - Jean Ribault of France explores the Georgia Coast and settles a company of Huguenots at Port Royal, S.C.

1566 - Spanish missionaries first arrive in Guale, which is now Georgia

1721 - Fort King George is erected by the British for protection against the Spanish and the French

1733 - General James Oglethorpe and the first Georgian colonists land at Yamacraw Bluff and select the town site of Savannah

1735 - General Oglethorpe grants 600 acres of Savannah land for the founding of the 1st Moravian church  on the continent

1736 - John Wesley founds America’s first Protestant Sunday School in Savannah

1742 - Oglethorpe's forces defeat the Spanish at the Battle of Bloody Marsh, ending the threat of Spanish aggression

1763 - Georgia's first newspaper, the Georgia Gazette, is published in Savannah

1773 - 1st Negro Baptist church in America is founded at Silver Bluff

1776 - George Walton, Dr. Lyman Hall, and Button Gwinnett sign the Declaration of Independence for Georgia

1783 - Nation’s 1st government supported high school, Richmond Academy, opens in Augusta

1785 - The University of Georgia becomes the first state-chartered and supported university

1788 - Georgia ratifies the U.S. Constitution on January 2, becoming the fourth state

1793 - Eli Whitney invents the cotton gin on the Greene Plantation near Savannah

1802 - Georgia cedes all western territories from the Chattahoochee River to the Mississippi River to the national government

1802 - Sarah Porter Hillhouse becomes 1st American woman to own and edit a newspaper, The Washington Gazette

1805 - First land lottery is held in Georgia

1819 - 1st steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean, The Savannah, sets sail from Savannah on May 20 en route to Liverpool, England

1821 - 1st Native American alphabet created by Sequoyah, a member of the Cherokee Indian nation whose capitol, New Echota, was later established in Georgia in 1825

1828 -  America’s first gold rush begins in Auraria, Lumpkin County, near Dahlonega

1828 - 1st Native American newspaper, The Cherokee Pheonix, is published in New Echota

1830 - Launcelot Johnston discovers the process by which cotton seed oil can be made from  cotton seed

1834 - 1st iron sea vessel, the John Randolph, is built in Savannah

1836 - First state-owned railroad, W & A Railroad, is created by the Georgia General Assembly on December 21

1836 - Wesleyan College founded in Macon - the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women

1838 - Cherokee Indians are forcibly removed to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears

1844 - Dr. John Gorrie of Columbus invents the 1st machine used for manufacturing ice

1861 - Georgia secedes from the Union; Alexander Stephens is elected Vice-President of the Confederacy

1864 - Following the Battle of Atlanta, General William Sherman carves a path of destruction on his March to the Sea

1866 - Georgia is 1st state to grant full property rights to married women

1870 - Georgia is readmitted to the Union

1881 - Spelman College in Atlanta becomes the 1st in the nation to grant a certificate to a black nurse

1886 -  John Pemberton first makes and sells Coca-Cola in Atlanta

1893 - Thomas E. Watson of Georgia introduces a bill in U.S. Congress which creates rural free mail  delivery

1895 - Atlanta hosts the Cotton States and International Exposition

1912 - Juliette Gordon Low founds the Girl Scouts of America in Savannah on March 12

1918 - Georgian Moina Bell Michael originates the Flanders Field Memorial Poppy, the memorial flower of World War I, on  November 9

1922 - Rebecca Felton of Cartersville becomes the first woman to serve in the U.S. Senate

1929 - Passenger air service begins in Atlanta

1932 - Dr. Charles Herty of Georgia makes newsprint from pine

1948 - WSB-TV broadcasts as the first television station in Georgia

1945 - Georgia changes the legal voting age from 21 to 18

1964 - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is the first Georgian awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

1974 - Hank Aaron, an Atlanta Brave, breaks Babe Ruth’s home run record

1979 - MARTA inaugurates rapid rail service in Atlanta; today it is one of the largest, serving over 68 million passengers per year

1976 - Former Governor Jimmy Carter becomes the first Georgian to be elected President of the United States

1980 - CNN (headquartered in Atlanta) is first broadcast to the world

1983 - New state Constitution becomes effective

1991 - Atlanta selected as the site for the 1996 Olympics

1993 - HOPE (Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally) Scholarship program begins

1994 - Atlanta hosts Super Bowl XXVIII; 72,817 in attendance

1996 - Atlanta and Georgia host the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games

2001 - New state flag adopted

2002 - President Carter (former Georgia governor) receives Nobel Peace Prize
